Awareness about menopause and breast cancer has grown significantly, but an important group is often overlooked: breast cancer survivors experiencing menopause. These women deserve to know their options for managing symptoms and finding relief. Unfortunately, many are left struggling because their doctors may not fully understand the available data or might not even realize their patients are suffering.
Breast cancer survivors often face severe menopause symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, sleep issues, vaginal dryness, joint pain, mood swings, and sexual dysfunction. Despite the significant impact these symptoms have, many survivors are not offered help.
The belief that estrogen and progesterone are completely off-limits for breast cancer survivors dates back to the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative Study. However, when we closely examine the data, most studies suggest that menopause hormone therapy (MHT) has no effect or even decreases breast cancer recurrence. It’s worth noting that only one randomized controlled trial has specifically addressed MHT and breast cancer since that study.
What does this mean for you as a breast cancer survivor dealing with menopause? It means you deserve a thorough conversation with a knowledgeable physician who can explore your unique situation, the available evidence, and your options for relief.
If you’re undergoing treatment with medications like Tamoxifen, Raloxifene, or aromatase inhibitors (e.g., Anastrozole, Exemestane, Letrozole), managing side effects is crucial. Dr. Waymire is here to help you navigate these challenges, so you can complete your treatment while improving your quality of life.
Importantly, vaginal estrogen is often safe and beneficial for many breast cancer survivors and can be started before, during, or after treatment to relieve symptoms.
